I find it really really crazy and amazing to think about the fact that my great grandfather refused to join Hitler’s army and was therefore put in jail for the duration of World War II. First of all I’m honored to be related to that man, even though I never met him. I feel like I should live proudly knowing what he did, and then I think about him making that decision and wonder whether he knew that his great granddaughter would be proud of him. And I think that’s a good and honorable way to make a decision- doing something because you know even generations down, someone will be proud of the decision you made. And second, it’s insane to me that if the circumstances had been slightly different and he hadn’t survived (like the majority of people who rebelled against the army), basically my entire family and I wouldn’t exist at all
